How Can We Help?
Videos still have subtitles even though I turned them off
This is probably caused by you and your students’ Youtube settings. The root of the problem is that there are two different kinds of subtitles, FluentKey subtitles and Youtube subtitles.
FluentKey subtitles are built into our site and can be turned on and off, for both teachers and students. (Link to see how to do this.)
Some videos hosted on Youtube may, however, have their own Youtube subtitles, which will also appear on FluentKey. You need to go to Youtube to turn them off.
Please watch the video below for a quick walkthrough on how to do this.
- Step 1: Go to the video on FluentKey
- Step 2: Click on the Youtube link (in the bottom right corner of the video player) to see the video in Youtube
- Step 3: On the video player bar, click “CC” to turn off subtitles
To hide subtitles on all Youtube videos by default, you need to change your account settings.
- Step 1: Click your profile picture
- Step 2: Click Settings
- Step 3: From the left-hand Menu, click Playback and performance.
- Step 4: Uncheck “Always show captions.”
- Step 5: Uncheck “Include auto-generated captions (when available).”
Unfortunately, there is no way to permanently override Youtube subtitles for all your students. Anyone has the option to turn on or off subtitles on their own Youtube account. If you don’t want your students to see Youtube subtitles when watching videos, please ask your students to follow the above steps and change their settings.
